Salvatore Del Prete, age 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at home in Naples, Florida. Beloved dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather, “Sal” had been married to his teenage sweetheart, the late Margie (Degnan) Del Prete, for 43 years. He was the youngest of five siblings, children of Salvatore and Ersilia Del Prete, who emigrated from Italy. He was “Dad” to four children, Tom, Rob, Kathy Anzeveno, and Joe and to their spouses, Elena, Peggy, Frank, and Gayle, “Grandpa” to eleven grandchildren, Robbie, Lauren, Joey, Christopher, Juliana, Kyle, Korie, Jamie, Jillian, Natasha, and Andrei, and “Great-Grandpa” to four, Colten, Hayley, Peter, and George.
Sal was an athlete, coach, teacher, and military veteran. Born in Providence, he graduated from Central High School, where he participated in football, wrestling, and track. Thanks to a football scholarship, he went to Boston College, completing his education after one year of military service that brought him to the South Pacific just after World War II ended. His teaching career began at LaSalle Academy, where he served as the school’s first wrestling coach, steering the team to its first state championship in 1960. His long career as a public-school social studies teacher in Warwick culminated as department head at Winman Middle School. For decades he was a dedicated parishioner of Mary Mother of Mankind Church in North Providence, where he served as a church lector and as co-chair of the building committee that financed a new church.
Stalwart in his faith, devoted deeply to his family, dedicated as an educator, and known for his love of pasta, broccoli rabe, provolone, Italian bread, apple pie, and ice cream, Sal leaves a legacy of unshakeable commitment, graciousness, and love.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 9 am from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Mary, Mother of Mankind Church.
