Obituary

Matthew A. Fagan, 92, of Smithfield, passed away Friday, October 30th, 2026, surrounded by his family at The St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield, RI. He was the husband of the late Jean E. (Charbonneau) Fagan, whom he was married to for 33 years. Born in Concord, MA, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Bertha (Garriepy) Fagan.

Matt is survived by his three children, Karen J. Sousa (Donald) of Rhode Island, Matthew A. Fagan Jr. (Joanne) of Connecticut, and Michael G. Fagan of Arizona. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Breguet and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter, Eileen P. Fagan, his brothers Lawrence Fagan, Jr. and James F. Fagan.

Matt’s grandchildren brought him tremendous joy. He was grandfather to Katie, DJ, Sarah, Anna, and Kelsey and great-grandfather to Ella, Paige, Dominic, and Hudson.

He attended Lasalle Academy and North Providence High School. After graduation, he was drafted into in the US Army in 1953 and served until his honorable discharge as Corporal in 1955. For most of his life, he worked for the Fagan Bus & Truck Company alongside his father, Larry. He also worked for the Worcester Textile Company after the family business closed. If you were a student or athlete growing up in Smithfield in the 60’s through the 80’s, chances are Mr. Fagan was driving you around the state of Rhode Island in his 66-passenger Chevy bus equipped with radio and speakers. When “American Pie” came over those radio waves you could hear an entire bus of students singing along on the back roads of Smithfield. A man with deep-rooted knowledge of the town of Smithfield and world history, he seemed to know it all. It didn’t matter if you were talking about the town and its families, global news, current events, or sports, he could converse on any topic. Be warned though, one question could lead you to being locked in his clutches for hours with more unsolicited factoid’s than you bargained for.

Matt was a devout Catholic and a lifetime parishioner at St. Michaels Church in Georgiaville, where he worshiped weekly and prayed the rosary daily.

On the weekends, you could always find Matt at his hunting camp in Marlow, New Hampshire, hunting or fishing with his father, sons, cousins, nephews, and friends. He cherished all the fun and laughs there along with the friendships made in Marlow, especially his friend Don Elliott and all of Don’s extended family.
