Frances Levandosky Mahan, 100, passed away on December 13 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center.
Born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Bronislaw (Bernard) Lewandowski and Wvadislawa (Laura) Ivandowsky. She was the wife of Joseph F. Mahan, a World War II veteran and survivor of Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal.
A role model to all who knew her, Frances demonstrated a strong work ethic throughout a career that began at the age of 18. After graduating from high school, she entered federal service in Washington, DC, working at the Voice of America, part of the Office of War.
She lived a full and social life in Washington, DC, enjoying her love of beautiful clothes, fun, and travel. As part of a working trip, she traveled by ocean liner to Paris, London, and Scotland. In 1963, she moved to Rhode Island, her husband’s place of birth, and worked at the Providence VA Hospital until her retirement. She completed 40 years of consistent government service and was presented with an Award of Service.
She is survived by her four children, Michele, Bernard, Joseph, and Laura, who feel blessed to have had a mother who treated them with unsurpassed kindness.
Her grandchildren are Bethany, Michael, Kelly, Charles, Joseph, Robert, Evan, and Jason. Her great-grandchildren are Nicholas, Ethan, Matthew, Eliza, Gabriel, Lucas, Harrison, Troy, and Makayla.
Fran was a gifted artist, a sewer, and an avid reader with a curious mind. Above all, she had a deep love of life and was known for remarking on beautiful days, “This is a day when you’re just happy to be alive!”
