Elsie Hirst

Elsie H. Hirst, 100, passed away May 2nd, 2022, at Roger Williams Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Johnston, Rhode Island, Elsie was the second daughter of the late Ernest Hirst and Hannah (Illingsworth) Hirst. Elsie’s family later moved to North Providence to be closer to family, living in Fruit Hill and Greystone; spending weekends with her cousins, Joseph, William, and Arnot Atherton, at their summer cottage on Rome Point, North Kingstown.

After graduating from Classical High School, Elsie attended Katherine Gibbs, acquiring the financial and professional skills needed to lead a long and emotionally independent life. Elsie’s career began in 1941 at Factory Mutual Insurance Company, which ultimately became FM Global, retiring 40 years later as executive secretary to the Allendale President, Johnston office.

Upon retirement, Elsie was again drawn to the shoreline, moving to Narragansett with her sister Hilda who died in 2003. Elsie and Hilda will be remembered for their Christian faith and charitable giving legacy. Elsie’s memorial service will be private.
