Bernard J. Harwood

Bernard J. Harwood, 72, of North Providence, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 10, 2026.  He was the husband of Pauline Winsor-Harwood.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on August 30, 1954, he was a son of the late Bernard A. and Helen T. (McKinnon) Harwood.  Bernard built a life marked by dedication, warmth, and quiet skill. He attended Mt. St. Charles, where he played hockey, and later continued his education at prep school in Lake Placid and at CCRI. Those who knew him will remember a man who was kind-hearted, easy to talk to, and blessed with a great sense of humor and a quick wit.

Bernard devoted much of his working life to RIPTA, where he began in 1983 as a mechanic. Through years of hard work, knowledge, and commitment, he rose to retire as Director of Maintenance. His career reflected the qualities that defined him so well: he could fix anything, and whatever he did, he believed it had to be done perfectly.

Beyond his work, Bernard enjoyed watching sports and spending time sharing stories from years gone by. He loved reminiscing and had a gift for telling detailed stories that drew people in and made ordinary moments memorable. He was also known as someone who was great at teaching others how to drive, offering patience, confidence, and practical wisdom in a way that came naturally to him.

Above all, Bernard will be remembered for the way he made people feel. His kindness, humor, and steady presence left a lasting impression on family and friends alike. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, Bernard J. Harwood, Jr. and his wife, Victoria, and Joshua W. Harwood; his stepdaughter, Marie Coletta and her husband, Giuseppe Lancellotta; six grandchildren, Deonte, Nikayla, Nevaeh, Ava, Giada, and Giuseppe; his sister, Helen Matteson and her husband, Robert; and his brother, John Bernard Harwood and his wife, Patricia.

His life will be celebrated with visitation on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 4-7 pm in the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Continuum Hospice or the Morning Star Home Care.
