Barbara L. Vernava, loving and devoted wife of the late Alvah Vernava, daughter of the late John M. and Margaret E. (Longley) Booth and sister to the late Brenda B. Gates was called home at the age of 81. She leaves behind daughter Kimberly, son Jon, daughter-in-law Crystal, and grandsons Nathan and Mitchell, all of Scituate, RI. In addition, she leaves her nephews, several great nephews and nieces as well as those who affectionately called her “Aunt Barbara” or “Mom Vernava”.
Barbara earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of RI and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Rhode Island College. She was well-respected and well liked by students, parents, and colleagues at Hope Elementary school where she taught for 30+ years. She earned Teacher of the year for her school. She especially enjoyed teaching the history of Scituate to her third graders. She touched the lives of many students.
Barbara was an active member of North Scituate Baptist Church for 48 years where she served on the Board of Christian Education and as a Deacon. She co-chaired the Annual Harvest Dinner for many years as well as being part of the “egg” team for many a May Breakfast. She enjoyed worshiping with her brothers and sisters in Christ and especially singing Church Hymns; the majority of which she knew by heart.
Whether traveling, camping, sailing, hiking, biking, skiing, or enjoying the beach, she always put others first. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Barbara retired from teaching so she could help care for her grandsons who affectionately referred to her as Grandmama. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her grandsons play soccer.
Friends and family describe Barbara as smart, kind, caring, dedicated, compassionate, wonderful friend, team player, sweet, funny, sharer of nostalgic stories, respectful, thoughtful, practical, conducting oneself with decorum and above all loving; loving of family, friends, and those around her.
She will be greatly missed by all. We love you Mom, Grandmama, Aunt Barbara, Mom V… Best Mom ever!
