Arnot Atherton, born on October 31, 1925, in North Providence, Rhode Island, was the son of Joseph Atherton and Martha Hirst. He was predeceased by his parents, his elder brother Joseph, and his younger siblings William and Martha Ann.
A proud graduate of North Providence High School, Arnot was a gifted three-sport athlete. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably as a Signalman in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Arnot was deployed aboard amphibious assault craft and also served in the defense of onshore elements during General MacArthur’s campaign to liberate the Philippine Islands, demonstrating courage and adaptability under fire.
After the war, Arnot pursued higher education, earning an Associate Degree in Accounting from Bentley College and a Bachelor of Science from Northeastern University. At a time when computer studies were pursued through engineering-oriented programs, Arnot focused on computer systems and later returned to Northeastern as an Adjunct Professor, teaching Computer Systems Analysis and generously sharing his knowledge with future generations.
Following a six-month courtship, Arnot married the love of his life, Doris Elizabeth Fowler. Together, they built a home in Cumberland, Rhode Island, where they raised their two sons. Their devoted marriage endured until Doris’s passing in 2020.
Arnot spent most of his professional career at New England Electric (now National Grid), where he skillfully managed the Engineering Department’s finances until his retirement.
A devout Christian, Arnot lived his faith through quiet strength, humility, and steadfast service. His kindness, patience, and generosity were evident to all who knew him. He served faithfully as a deacon in the churches he and Doris attended, including Sheldonville Baptist Church in Sheldonville, Massachusetts, where he also led the youth group; Grace Baptist Church in Franklin, Massachusetts; and Pascoag Community Baptist Church in Pascoag, Rhode Island. At Pascoag, Arnot served as Deacon of Christian Education and as Treasurer of the Community Christian School. He and Doris also shared the responsibilities of the School Committee’s deaconship, serving with deep faith and dedication. Arnot always gave his very best to God and to all whom he served.
Arnot lived a long, active, and fulfilling life marked by kindness, compassion, and unwavering faith. He passed peacefully after a brief illness.
Arnot is survived by his sons, Eric Fowler Atherton of Norwood, Massachusetts, and Dwight Arnot Atherton of West Hartford, Connecticut; his daughter-in-law, Paula Lacerda (DeCastro) Atherton; and his beloved grandchildren, Ian Arnot Atherton and Dawson Fowler Atherton.
