Joyce Carlton

Joyce Edna (Sutcliffe) Carlton, 91 years old, of Capron Road, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, after a brief illness.  She was the wife of the late Richard (Dick) Carlton and the daughter of the late George and Gladys (Warburton) Sutcliffe.

Joyce was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1932 and grew up in Graniteville.  She was the youngest of three children.  She adored her older brother, George, and was very close to her sister, Betty Leigh.  Both George and Betty preceded her in death.

When Joyce turned 18, she married Dick Carlton, her high school sweetheart.  Eventually, Dick built them a house on Capron Road next door to his family’s farm.   There they raised their four children surrounded by extended family.

Joyce spent many years working as a bookkeeper, first for the Episcopal Diocese in Providence, then for Montgomery Ward, and finally, for her oldest daughter who owned Simply Elegant Florist in Smithfield.  Her hobbies included doing puzzles, reading books, going to casinos, and, of course, watching ‘Judge Judy’ and her beloved Red Sox.

What gave Joyce the most enjoyment, though, was spending time with her family.   She was so proud of each and everyone of them, and that included all the dogs and cats, too.  She leaves behind her loving children:  Richard (‘Rick’/Ann), Victoria, Jeffrey (‘Jeff’/Karen), and Amy.  She also leaves behind her caring grandchildren:  Keith, Amanda, Alicia, Meggin, Allie, Evan, and their spouses.  Finally, her eight great grandchildren want to thank her for always remembering their birthdays and holidays and making each of them feel special. “We love and miss you GG…”

Burial will take place at the Chapel of Highland Memorial Park on Saturday. August 5th, 2023, at 10:00 A.M.  Friends and family are all invited to the chapel next Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to “Friends of Paws in Prison” Lockhart, Texas at www.pawsinprison.com
